A tear-off lid of sheet metal for a can has a section which is enclosed by a notched line and can be torn off. A tear-off tab designed as a two-arm lever is mounted on this section near to its edge by means of a rivet, one arm being designed as a break-in lug which ends above the notched line and the other arm being designed as a pull ring, below which the lid has a depression. This depression forms a closed flat zone essentially within the boundary and below the pull ring, which zone extends in the direction away from the rivet beyond the pull ring in such a way that the pull ring can be gripped from below by a fingernail. This zone avoids unnecessary deformations and thus the risk of denting or rejection of the lid during production. Additionally, the pull ring can easily be levered up. <IMAGE>
