Before being switched on for the actual piecing operation, a fibre-feed device (110) is temporarily switched on for such a period that the fibres not required for piecing are combed out from the leading end of the sliver (2). These are prevented from being deposited on the fibre-collecting surface (136) by being discharged. The fibre-feed device (110) is subsequently switched off for such a period that the number of fibres combed out per unit time already remains essentially constant, but the fibres remaining in the leading end of the sliver are damaged only slightly by being cut off and/or intertwisted. The fibre-feed device (110) is then switched on again. Before the full intensity of the fibre flow is reached, the fibres are discharged until the possibly slightly damaged fibres have been discharged. Only then is the fibre stream, which still continues to increase, supplied to the fibre-collecting surface (136). In synchronism with this, the thread (20) is returned and, with the fibres incorporated, is drawn off again from the fibre-collecting surface (136). <IMAGE>
