After specified assembly steps have been carried out on subassemblies of this kind, rotary movements of the shaft (7) are required to prepare the next assembly step or for checking purposes. To this end, the intention is to specify a device which compensates for the unavoidable alignment, spacing and angle errors which occur during the 'docking' with the shaft of the respective subassembly. For this purpose, the device has a clamping head assigned to the shaft (7), a cardanically mounted housing (45) arranged coaxially with respect to the clamping head, a sensor and a drive. With the clamping head (1) released, the latter is fixed radially and axially relative to the cardanically mounted housing (45). When the clamping head (1) is in the clamping position, the fixing relative to the housing (45) is cancelled. A first bearing is provided in the region of the drive, while the second bearing is formed by the shaft (7) itself. One subsection of the drive line is designed as a torsionally rigid metal bellows coupling. <IMAGE>
