A device for load detection in an internal combustion engine is described in which a main load signal is formed by means of an air flow rate meter. The values of the air flow rate meter signal sampled with a high-speed timing clock are linearised, summed over a segment at the ignition interval and the sum is divided by the number of samplings. By means of division by the rotational speed averaged in the same segment and an adaptation constant, the raw value of the main load signal is obtained. In parallel with this, a secondary load signal is produced from the throttle valve angle and the average value of the rotational speed determined in this way, taking into account an altitude adaptation. Usually, the main load signal is used for further processing and the secondary load signal is only switched over to when a fault occurs or under specific operating conditions. The raw load signal obtained from the main load signal or the secondary load signal is filtered in a suitable filter with a timing constant which can be switched over and is subsequently limited to a maximum value. The load signal which is thus obtained is used to control the internal combustion engine. <IMAGE>
