A telephone (102) and central switching facility (104) are used to transmit a triggering signal over-the-air to a receiver (202) located in a vehicle (108) in order to prevent theft or improper use of the vehicle. The triggering signal can be relayed through a satellite (106). Upon receiving the signal, the receiver sends an input signal to a tripping circuit (208). In response to the input signal, the tripping circuit trips a switch, thereby interrupting the vehicle's ignition (210) and/or activating a vehicle alarm (212) system or vehicle homing transmitter (214).
