The invention relates to an apparatus designed to clean gases, comprising: a chamber, at least one spray head for generating a liquid curtain in the chamber, the liquid curtain dividing the chamber into a first and a second compartment, a supply connection for supplying the first compartment with the gases to be cleaned, and a discharge connection for discharging the cleaned gases from the second compartment. Experience has shown that such an apparatus is highly effective in cleaning gases from a cooking facility. As a result of the abovementioned measures it is necessary only to use a fan of limited capacity. The resistance of the gas stream passing through the liquid curtain is low. Moreover, if use is made of a liquid having a high deodorizing and fat-absorbing capability, the filter is highly effective in removing unpleasant odours and fats (grease) and possible other contaminants from the gases in question.
