An assembly process for long sections of the support leg struts of an oil platform is claimed, each section comprising a rectangular plate (12), with toothed edges (14) forming a toothed rack, and a counter-brace (13) of half-shell form fixed on each main face (12a, b) of the plate The process comprises (a) machining a flat (15) along each main face of the plate on each side of its longitudinal axis, each flat (15) being inclined towards this axis and being spaced from the axis by a distance corresponding to the radius of the counter-brace (13); (b) machining a groove (16) along the plate and between each flat (15) and the axis; (c) machining a bevel (17) on the counter-brace longitudinal edges, the bevel being inclined towards the counter-brace axis at the same angle as the inclination of the corresponding flat (15); (d) positioning the counter-braces (13) on the plate (12) such that the bevelled edges rest on the flats; (e) electron beam welding the edges to the flats under external vacuum to form a strut section; and (f) heat treating the section. <IMAGE> |
