A control device for an embroidery machine the operability of which is improved so as to be simply operated by unskilled operators or foreign operators who can only understand and speak foreign languages. Exclusive switches (21A SIMILAR 21J) having symbols and auxiliary switches (22A SIMILAR 22D) are provided on an operating section (14) of a control device (12), and symbols or the like showing the information of commands assigned to the respective exclusive switches (21A SIMILAR 21J) are shown on the surfaces thereof. In addition, commands subordinate to the operations of the exclusive switches (21A SIMILAR 21J) having symbols are selectively assigned to the respective auxiliary switches (22A SIMILAR 22D) in advance. Symbol patterns showing the commands assigned to the respective auxiliary switches (22A SIMILAR 22D) are displayed on a menu display area (15A) of a display section (15). Furthermore, messages in the form of symbol patterns corresponding to respective operations are displayed in a message display area (15B) as required.
