PURPOSE:To provide a picture retrieving device capable of reflecting a user's retrieving purpose to a retrieved result and easily editing/synthesizing a required picture. CONSTITUTION:The picture retrieving device for retrieving picture parts in accordance with a natural language sentence is provided with an input part 200 for receiving a natural language sentence, a language analyzing part 201 for obtaining the syntax structure of the natural language sentence by analyzing the sentence while referring to a language analytical dictionary 206, a situation element dividing part 205 for referring to a situation element dividing dictionary 210, converting the syntax structure of the natual language sentence into its meaning structure and dividing a situation expressed by the meaning structure of the sentence at least into one situation element, a picture data base 212 for storing picture parts corresponding to respective situation elements, and a picture retrieving part 211 for retrieving picture parts from the data base 212 by using each situation element as a picture retrieving key.
