In order to attain subjectively pleasant listening even when reception is poor with frequent muting, in the case of digital radio transmission, the level of the sound signal received is gradually decreased. When reception is improved such that, only by using error correction and error masking, the reproduced sound signal is felt not to be unpleasant, the level of the sound signal is gradually increased again to the normal value.
