In a press for the cold working of metal workpieces, in particular a coin or medal-stamping press (10), having a hydraulic power drive and a pressbody (18) in the form of a self-contained frame, the housing (26) of the drive cylinder (14) forms both the yoke (19) of the pressbody (18) on the drive side and, with partial areas of its casing, sections of the pressbody side-pieces (23, 24). The clear lateral distance (D) between the side-pieces is only slightly larger than the diameter of the piston rod (96) of the drive cylinder (14), which rod carries the upper tool (16) of the press (10). The drive cylinder (14) can be set at various amounts of the effective drive surfaces of its piston in order to switch over to rapid and load-advance movements. In order to control the advance and return strokes of the piston (36) of the drive cylinder (14), a follow-up regulator valve (79) is provided which operates by the nominal values of the position of the drive cylinder (36) being preset incrementally and in an electrically controllable manner and the actual value of the position of the drive cylinder piston (36) being adaptively fed back mechanically (76, 77).
