Torsion damper with progressive response for IC engine clutch

The torsional damper comprises pairs of helical springs (8,9) one inside the other contained within openings in the friction surface rear cover and output plates (4,5,6) of a clutch plate (1). The springs dampen by compressing when torque is applied to the plate and allowing some rotation of the output plate relative to the other two plates.The end faces (13a,13b,14a,14b) of the openings in the output plate are shaped to be in contact with the ends of the outer spring (8) but have a gap between them (13c,14c) an the inner spring (9) when the clutch is disengaged. The additional stiffness of the inner spring only takes effect after some compression of the outer spring has taken place.
