A mechanical pencil having a front sleeve 1, a cap (4, Fig 1) rotatably and detachably mounted at the rear end of the sleeve, rotation of the cap actuating a mechanism (10) for advancing a lead L, and comprising a rotation cam (24) and a cam sleeve 26 biased into engagement with the cam, includes means to prevent lead breakage in the event that the pencil is dropped. The inside diameter of the front end of the cam sleeve 26 is larger than an outside diameter of the rear end 14b of the lead advancing mechanism (10) so that the rear end of the lead advancing mechanism is inserted into the front end of the cam sleeve 26 with a clearance S1 in the radial direction. Also the inside diameter of the rear end 14b is larger than the outside diameter of the lead L by a clearance S2. <IMAGE>
