In each pipe (3) leading to an individual cylinder (2) from the inlet manifold (4) a sensor (8) is directed towards the inlet valve (6) from a point upstream of the injector (5). From, e.g. a four-cylinder engine (1) the signals from the four sensors are taken to a processor (9) which responds with a command to the engine controller (10) cutting-off the supply of fuel to any cylinder in which pre-ignition is detected.
