The protector has a bulkhead (4) for blocking or interrupting a path (1), such as a ventilation duct or drain pipe, along which smoke or flames can otherwise spread. The bulkhead is operated by an element (5), which has a material which can adjust its shape in the solid state in response to temperature change, either independently from, or in addition to, its general thermal expansion. The material used may have a shape-memorising capacity, and preferably may be a metal alloy, or may be a plastics which expands and produces a foam on heating. The element may also be made of a bimetal material, and may form a hinge mounting for the bulkhead.
