The unit is based on a metal tube which is bent into the shape of a circle, and around which electromagnets are placed, in the manner of a miniature atomic particle accelerator. The fields from the electromagnets are aligned in order to accelerate a projectile to a maximum speed in the circular part of the barrel, through the repelling effect of like magnetic poles. The projectile is prevented from leaving its orbit by a protective magnetic field. When the acceleration is finished, the accelerating field around the orbit is switched off, and the protective field is then switched off, or changed over.
