In an electronic safety device for motor vehicle passengers (1) with an acceleration-sensitive sensor (200), a control device (201), a plurality of retaining means (31/1, ..., 31/6) and final stages (30/1, ..., 30/6) allocated to said retaining means, the reliable operation of the safety device is ensured in that characteristic fault statuses can be stored together with control strategies compensating them and, in the event of a fault, the relevant control strategy is applied to activate the retaining means.
