The document shredder has a cutting mechanism (13) and a drive circuit for the cutter mechanism activated by a monitoring light barrier positioned at the input slot. A light pipe (31) is connected to optical transducers (28,29) mounted on a circuit board (26), with a gap (34) in the light pipe at the input slot. The circuit-board and light pipe components are mounted on clips to the housing lid of the equipment.
