The chair seat forms a first element (1) and the frame the second element (2), on which is secured a cylinder (3). A spacer coupled to the first element slides in the cylinder against the force of at least one resetting spring (11), or vice versa. The sliding motion (7) can be blocked in any position and released by an actuator (8). There is a mechanical brake (57,61) with at least one brake element for the actuator release. The spacer is in the form of a piston rod (6), through which the actuator passes axially outwards. The piston rod is coupled to a piston (5) arrestable by the mechanical brake.
