The chuck has a body containing a clamping sleeve (3) with axial slits. An axial force is generated by an element, such as a sleeve nut, which pushes the clamping sleeve against wedge surfaces, in order for it to grip around the cylindrical shaft of a tool (25).Both the body and the sleeve have axially separated wedge surfaces (4,4a,6,6a), in order to grip the tool at multiple positions. The surfaces may be staggered axially with respect to one another, and/or may have varying diameters, so that the innermost is tensioned first. The separation may also be achieved by a flexible section (14).
