The device (8) provides a covering (7) for the upper opening (2) of a container (1), and can be slid and/or rolled up. It may be similar to a roller shutter arranged in a horizontal plane.The container may have guides, such as rails (10), on its outer side walls (3), along which elements (6) of the covering may be slid. The elements may consist of slats which engage with one another. Each slat may have a guide bearing on one end, in order to engage with a rail, and neighbouring slats may be orientated with the bearings on opposite rails.
