Combustion exhaust gases are wet-scrubbed and active coal particles are added to the scrubbing liquid to bind heavy metals, in particular mercury. After being separated from the suspension produced during wet-scrubbing, the active coal particles are recirculated into the wet scrubbing liquid, but a part of the active coal particles is recovered and subjected to thermal desorption.
