A means of checking for the presence of a label on the surface of e.g. a bottle comprises a laser source (9) and reflection sensor mounted on a fixed pillar (13) alongside the periphery of a carousel (4) labelling machine whose rotating tables (5) support the bottles (2).The bottles (2) are accurately positioned on the tables (5) by a centring bell (not shown) and when labelled move past the source (9) in the direction (3).A sudden shortening of the reflected beam occurs as a label edge is registered (10) crossing the optical axis (12) by the high resolution laser sensor assembly.
