A ball valve 10 comprises a housing 12 provided with connecting holes 14, 16 and an opening 30 into a cavity 18, 20 located at right angles to the connecting holes 14, 16, and a rotatable hemispherical plug 22 which is inserted through the opening 30 into the cavity 18, 20 and which is actuatable by means of a sealed selector shaft 36 running on bearings. Sealant is provided between the plug 22 and the housing 12, and a cover 32 closes off the assembly opening 30. The plug 22 has recesses 62, 64 corresponding in number to the connecting holes 14, 16 and capable of being aligned with these holes 14, 16, being so dimensioned and arranged as to cover the holes 14, 16 when aligned accordingly, and sealing elements 66, 68 accommodated in the recesses 62, 64 having outer surfaces adapted to the spherical form of the plug 22. Such a ball valve can be manufactured at low cost, whilst enabling the plug and sealant to be installed in, and removed from, the valve after the valve has been welded in position within a length of piping. <IMAGE>
