The yarn brake mechanism, for a textile machine, has two rollers (1, 2) with tangential pressure contact between them. They have hard surfaces, pref. of chromed steel, and have different dias. The roller (1) with a larger dia. is a cylinder with a brake action. The smaller roller (2) is pressed, at a tangent, directly to the yarn. The yarn guides (9, 10), upstream and downstream of the rollers (1, 2), are on planes offset from each other. The upstream guide (9) is on a plane at right angles to the tangent line between the rollers (1, 2), and near the pressure roller (2) the downstream guide (10) is offset towards the free end of the longer cylinder (1), set on a vertical plane through the exterior of the tangent line between the two rollers. The yarn to be tensed is nipped between the roller (2) and cylinder (1), to form at least one coil round the cylinder outside the nipping line, before passing through at least the downstream guide (10).
