The piezoelectric composite transducer consists of a combination piezoelectric material (14) layer with a pair of electrodes (16,18) on opposite faces and a means (12) over the layer to concentrate the applied forces to the piezoelectric material. The material of the concentration layers (12) has a Young's modulus relatively low compared to that of the piezoelectric material layer e.g. an order or magnitude loss. The concentration material is natural rubber, synthetic rubber, resins of epoxy, urethane, vinyl or such combinations. The piezoelectric material is polyvinylidene fluoride or copolymers with barium titanate, lead-zircon-titanate and PTFE. Also claimed are transducers consisting of a box contg. detector, means on each box surface for transferring loads to the detector unit and output.
