A process for the extraction of arsenic, present as derivs. in various oxidn. states, in soils, which comprises the treatment of the soils with an aq. extraction agent followed by sepn. of the treated soils from the extraction soln. The extraction soln. is an alkaline alkali- or alkaline earth hypo-halogenite, in which the pH is maintained at a value greater than 7 during the operation. The agent conforms to the general formula.
