A pump, in particular a plunger pump, has a pump head (5), a working chamber (2) and at least one displacement element (1) that oscillates in the direction of the longitudinal axis (L) of the pump inside the working chamber (2) and that projects out of the working chamber (2) through an opening. The displacement element (1) is sealed in relation to the pump head (5) by a gasket (7). In order to monitor packing wear, the displacement element (1) extends through a monitoring chamber (12) at the side of the gasket (7) away from the working chamber (2) of the pump. The monitoring chamber (12) contains a transfer medium and is connected to measurement apparatus (17, 19) for carrying out measurements on the transfer medium. Also disclosed is a wear measurement process for pumps of the above-mentioned type.
