FIELD: petroleum processing; production of carbon fibers. SUBSTANCE: isotropic fiber-forming pitch production includes continuous thermal polycondensation of petroleum raw material at 330-380 C under pressure 20-50 at and distilling off low-molecular reaction products in presence of non-oxidizing agent such as overheated steam or nitrogen at 300-360 C, feeding rate of said agent being 375-10000 l/h. As a petroleum raw material, pyrolysis tar is used, which is subjected in advance to ultrasonic treatment in presence of 0.1-0.5 wt % of a surfactant such as a mixture of polyethylene glycol with average mol.weight 400 and polyethylene glycol adipate at weight ratio (60-80):(40:20).
