PURPOSE: To execute accurate endoscope diagnosis by calculating a histogram for a branched video signal, automatically changing a gamma correction value correspondingly to the histogram and displaying an always optimum image. CONSTITUTION: An image pickup signal outputted from a solid state image pickup element 4 is amplified by an amplifier 23, a video signal is extracted by an S/M converter 24 and converted into a digital signal by an A/D converter 25 and the digital signal is stored in a field memory 26 and sent to aγcorrection lookup table 27 to execute 7 correction. An output from the table 27 is stored in frame memories 28R, 28G, 28B by a timing circuit 15 and subjected to D/A conversion by the use of D/A converters 29R, 29G, 29B and analog outputs are outputted to a TV monitor through an encoder 30. A histogram calculating part 32 calculates the histogram of a branched output of the video signal from the converter 25 and a signal generated from a selected signal generator 33 is sent to the table 27. Plural different 7 correction values are written and stored in the table 27, and when a selection signal is sent to a switching bit, one 7 correction value is automatically outputted.
