PURPOSE: To facilitate maintenance by easily assembling a chain tension to a casing in the accurate sealing state, and also to make the chain tensioner as an oil inspection tool in addition to the chain tensioning function. CONSTITUTION: In a chain tensioner wherein an attaching shaft 27 perpendicular to an idler shaft center is provided on a holding body 28 for loosely and rotatably supporting an idler 25, and the attaching shaft is inserted into and attached to a supporting cylinder provided on a casing 9, a shaft supporting hole part 30 into which the attaching shaft is to be fitted is formed on the casing inner side part of the supporting cylinder. An O-ring 34 is interposed between a collar part 33a end surface of an oil sealing bolt 33 to be screwed to an internal thread part on the outside part from the outside of the casing and the supporting cylinder outer end surface, and a small-diameter part 27e is formed on the outer shaft end part of the attaching shaft. The small-diameter part is fitted into a recessed hole opened on the center part of the oil sealing bolt, a shim 35 is interposed between the small-diameter part end surface and the recessed hole bottom surface, and an oil flowing hole 31 is provided on the shaft center part of the attaching shaft.
