Metal cylinder head gasket

The gasket has at least one layer of sheet metal, and has first (34,38) and second sealing elements. The latter is made from twisted metallic strands (46,48) and forms a closed ring with a radial clearance from the first element. The gasket and the second element are so formed, and the latter is so arranged in the former, that when it is installed and the cylinder head is tightened, the thickness in the direction of pressing of the metallic region of the gasket, is larger in the region of the second element than the first element. Both supporting surfaces (34,36) of the gasket can move relative to one another parallel to the plane of the seal, at least in the region of the second sealing element, by at least initially localised rotation of the sealing strands about their central longitudinal axes.
