PURPOSE: To prevent the fluctuation in an inter-substrate spacing (cell thickness) and the yellowing attended with this. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal element is formed by holding chiral smectic liquid crystals 15 between a pair of substrates 11a, 11b having electrodes 12a, 12b and has effective optical modulation regions and peripheral regions. These chiral smectic liquid crystals 15 are liquid crystals movable along the substrate surfaces and the liquid crystal molecules of the peripheral regions are randomly oriented without having uniaxiality. |
