The cleaner (1) is suspended at the top (4) of the sewer (3). It automatically cleans the sewer and the cleaning head (5) empties the waste (8) into a treatment area (6) which has a device which shreds, compacts and dries the waste and then tips it into a store (9). The treatment area (6) may have a sealed valve (10) between the opening (11) between the treatment area and the sewer (3). The valve is activated when there is flooding to give protection. The treatment area (6) has a forced cold air intake at the bottom and a warm air discharge at the top.
