The saw has a chain brake belt (4) wound around a drum (3) and applied by movement of a brake belt lever (7). A recoil brake lever (8) biased by a spring (14) is pivotable about a first axis (10) fixed to the casing. A rundown brake is constituted by a transmission link (12) between the throttle lever (6) and brake belt lever, and a rundown spring (15) biasing the belt towards the braking position (30). The brake belt lever is pivotable about a second (parallel) axis (11) when the rundown brake is applied.
