Method for measurement of the height of a liquid level, in particular, melt level in a continuous casting mould (1) by means of a pneumatic device according to which, gas at a predetermined pressure flows through a probe (3). The switching pressure of gas is set at a value above this predetermined pressure, and the following steps are repeatedly carried out: a) the probe is lowered to the liquid level with simultaneous measurement of the back pressure until the latter equals or exceeds the switching pressure; b) the height of the probe tip is determined at the instant when the back pressure equals or exceeds the switching pressure; c) the probe is retracted through a predetermined distance so that it can be lowered again. Also claimed is an appts. for implementation of the method.
