The appts. (15) to locate the yarn end on a wound cop, to be presented at the working height of cops with different amounts of wound material, has a housing (16) kept at an under pressure, with a vertical suction slit (19). A sliding sealing strip (31) is near the suction slit (19), with an air passage opening (32) and a suction jet (33). It can be positioned in a zero setting (N), where the suction slit (19) is covered by the sealing strip (31), and in a number of operating positions where the suction jet (33) is placed in front of the slit (19), with an under pressure at the jet opening. Pref. the housing (16) has a drive system to give a defined positioning to the sealing strip (31), so that the suction jet (33) is moved steplessly into a number of settings according to the state of winding on the cop (41). The housing drive has a powered deflection roller (29) at the end side of the housing (16) for the continuous sealing strip (31) at the top, with the strip passing round a deflection body (30) at the bottom. The housing has a tensioner for the sealing strip (31). A sensor (37), as a pole wheel, is near the axis (36) of the sealing strip deflection roller (29). A sensor (39), at the housing (16), is connected to the central control to register the zero setting (N). The housing wall (23) with the suction slit (19) has a convex curvature towards the suction slit (19). The housing (16) has a suction air connection (17), together with a cutter (48), to be linked to an under pressure source. A pair of yarn take-off rollers are within the housing (16).
