PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a novel skin conditioner containing a combination of a betaine ester and anα-hydroxy acid that supplies moisture to the skin, removes wrinkles, gives good feeling and shows good compatibility to skin. SOLUTION: This composition contains 0.1-20 wt.% of at least one of betaine ester of formula I (R1 is a 10-30C alkyl; A<-> is anion) and 0.05-20 wt.% of at least one ofα-hydroxyacid selected from citric acid and lactic acid where the pH of the composition is set to 1-7. The compound of formula I is preferably betain octadecyl ester or betain dodecyl ester. Theα-hydroxyacid is particularly selected from glycolic acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, salicylic acid, gluconic acid, glucuronic acid and sugar acids. The compound of formula I is prepared, for example, by direct esterification of an aliphatic alcohol with the betaine occurring in the saccharide production as a bye-product.
