<p>Methods and compositions for selectively detecting analytes in a homogeneous assay, a heterogeneous assay, or a mixture of the two by contacting a labeled probe:analyte complex with one or more amphiphiles. The invention is also useful for increasing the signal to noise ratio when used in conjunction with other assay systems.
