PURPOSE: To increase ultraviolet ray output by arranging a means to adjust mercury vapor pressure in a lamp so that mercury vapor pressure in the lamp of an arc tube and input density are put in the specific relationship. CONSTITUTION: A heat block 12 is held by an arc tube clearance spacer 15, an arc tube temporarily pressing-down plate 16 and an arc tube pressing-down plate 17. L-shaped heat kickers 18 and 19 are installed on a side surface of the heat block 12. An electric power supply means 33 supplies and electron having a rectangular wave whose input density N is (8w/cm<=N<=10w/cm) at lighting time or a sine wave not less than 5000Hz. The heat block 12, the arc tube clearance spacer 15, the arc tube temporarily pressing-down plate 16, the arc tube pressing-down plate, the L-shaped heat kickers 18 and 19 and plural cooling fins 31 constitute a cooling jig 30 to adjust mercury vaport pressure pHg in a lamp by cooling a tube surface around the electrode side of a light emitting tube 20 so that mercury vapor pressure pHg (Torr) in the lamp of the arc tube 20 and input density N (w/cm) are set in a range of (3×10<-1> / N<3> <=pHg<=7×10<-1> /N<3> ). |
