PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lustering coating agent excellent in the physical properties, such as luster, scratch resistance and abrasion resistance, of a coating film, and in the adhesiveness of the coating film to paper by using a coating film- forming resin produced by free radical polymerization in the presence of a specific chain transfer agent. SOLUTION: At least anα,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid selected from among (meth)acrylic acid, itaconic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid and (meth)acrylic acid esters is polymerized in the presence of a free radical polymerization initiator and a chain transfer agent of the formula (Q is a polyvalent organic group; X<1> is nitrile or CONH; A<1> and A<2> are each a 1-8C alkyl; X<2> is oxygen atom, S or NH; Z is a chain transfer group; p, q, r and x are each 0 or 1; m is an integer of 1-50; and n is an integer of 2-100), or theα,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid is copolymerized with at least a comonomer selected from the group consisting of aromatic or aliphatic ethylenic unsaturated monomers and hydroxyl group-containing (meth)acrylates. The obtained coating film- forming resin is compounded with a wax and a release agent to obtain a lustering coating agent for paper.
