A protective pad for absorbing impact comprising an outer sheet 5a and an inner sheet 5b, and a pair of opposed air bags 4a,4b each extending inwardly from a respective sheet and which are connected to an air supply 7,11 and a check valve 8 via a connecting duct 9. The pad is used on a protective garment such as a jacket (10), helmet (200,300), or a knee protector (500) (Figs. 1,4,5 not shown).
