Detection of misfiring in multicylinder combustion engine

The method involves detection of the angular position of the crankshaft by an inductive sensor, from which the intervals between passages of uniformly spaced marks are deduced and compared with a reference value for a measure of unevenness of rotation. A correction is applied (S5.3) from the load/speed characteristic (K(n,L)) to compensate for torsional vibrations and similar effects. A threshold value (Lur(n,L)) is introduced (S5.5) which may include a diminishing offset during successive learning stages. If it is exceeded an error lamp visible to the driver may be lit (S5.8).
