<p>A fly reel (10) for storing and adjustably dispensing fishing line. The inventive device includes a main housing (12) having a center hub (20) projecting therefrom. A spool (22) is rotatably mounted over the center hub (20) and operates to receive and dispense a fishing line thereon. A brake assembly is mechanically coupled to the spool (22) to allow the spool (22) to rotate freely in a first direction, and to adjustably retard rotation of the spool (22) in a second direction. The brake assembly includes a cylindrical bearing (34) interposed between the spool (22) and the center hub (20). A ratchet plate (32) is mounted to the cylindrical bearing (34) and is engaged by a pawl (52) mounted to the spool (22) when the spool (22) is rotated in the second direction. A center axle extends through the cylindrical bearing (34) and can be axially biased against the cylindrical bearing (34) to cause a frictional engagement of the ratchet plate (32) with an interior of the main body, thereby retarding rotation of the spool (22) in the second direction.</p> |
