The invention pertains to phenylacetic acid alkyl esters of formula I, wherein the index and substituents are as follows: R' is formyl, alkyl carbonyl or alkyl; R'' is alkyl; U is -O-, -S-, -NH- or -NHO-; V is -O-, -S-, or -NH-; X is cyano, nitro, halogen, alkyl, alkyl halide, alkoxy, alkoxy halide, alkyl thio or, if n is > 1, optionally substituted alkylene, alkenylene, oxyalkylene, oxyalkylenoxy, oxyalkenylene, oxyalkenylenoxy or butadiendiyl; n is 0, 1, 2 or 3; R is halogen, hydroxy, mercapto, amino, carboxyl, carbonylamino or an organic radical which is bonded directly or via an oxy, mercapto, amino, carboxyl or carbonylamino group, or, together with an X group and the phenyl ring to which they are bonded, an optionally substituted, bicyclic, partially or completely unsaturated system.
