The recording and playback machine includes a sliding plate (11) which is moved by spring pressure with a forwards and backwards movement on a chassis (10). The medium also includes a container (12) which moves a sliding cassette up and down between an unloaded and loaded position in conjunction with the movement of the sliding plate. A rotating element (14) with an integral locking claw (14h) and lock operating pin (14e) is mounted on the chassis such that the sliding plate is held back by the claw before the sliding cassette is loaded, thus holding the container in the unloaded position. The sliding cassette rotates the rotating element during loading, and the claw opens the lock, allowing the container to move to the loaded position and the lock to be opened by the pin.
