PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To heighten the purity of luminescence color by suppressing the growth of an alkali earth metal sulfide in an EL element having an alkali earth metal thiogallate luminescence layer. SOLUTION: First transparent electrode 2 made of ITO is formed on a glass board 1, and a buffer layer 3a made of SiON (silicon oxynitride), an insulation layer 3 made of SrTiO3 , a buffer layer 3b made of SiON, a CaGa2 S4 luminescence layer 4 to which Ce is added as a luminescence center, an insulation layer 5 made of SrTiO3 , and second transparent electrodes 6 made of ITO are formed thereon. Since the buffer layer 3b is insulation material in an amorphous state at the crystallizing temperature of the luminescence layer 4, the growth of CaS is suppressed at the crystallizing time of the luminescence layer 4.
