Disclosed are a remote controller which sends various signals for operating an appliance, such as VTR, according to an inclination degree thereof and a method for operating the remote controller. The remote controller comprises a key matrix(11) for selecting a function of an appliance, a microcomputer(12) which generates a control signal based on an input signal of key matrix(11), an infrared ray generator(13) which is controlled by microcomputer(12) for emitting an infrared ray, inclination angle detecting portions(21,22) which detect an inclination degree of the remote controller in the left and right directions, a key-scan switch(23) which is controlled by microcomputer(12) so as to switch the signals inputted from inclination detecting portions(21 and 22), and an A/D converter(24) which converts an analog signal to a digital signal and sends the digital signal to microcomputer(12). The method comprises the steps of scanning keys(S10), detecting an inclination degree of remote controller(S20), comparing and determining a digital voltage(S30), and carrying out the function according to the determined digital voltage(S40).
