A press, for vibratory compaction of slabs or blocks of particulate stone or ceramic material, has a vertically moving slide ram which cooperates with equipment for producing vibratory motion of predetermined and adjustable frequency and which is located in a stationary head portion in which a controlled reduced pressure is created. A sealable chamber, for holding the mould or mould box contg. the particulate material and binder, is formed in the head portion and encloses the slide ram in all its positions. The slide ram (14) consists of a box (28) communicating with the atmos. outside the head portion (10), and the vibration generating equipment consists of one or more motor-driven vibrators fitted inside the slide ram (14).
