The method has the welding current for generating the welding arc supplied at a variable frequency, with the frequency variation corresponding to the variation in the amplitude of the welding current at least over a partial range. A respective welding current frequency is assigned to each welding current amplitude, with linear variation of the current frequency between a min. and a max. value of the welding current amplitude.
